Holistic Intelligence to Enable Advanced Battery Systems

Abstract

We stand at the cusp of a global energy transition, where the shift toward sustainable energy production and utilization is rapidly unfolding. A driver for this transformation is lithium-ion batteries, celebrated for their high energy density, long cycle life, and declining costs. Yet, despite their pivotal role in energy storage, these batteries face challenges in performance and safety, raising concerns about their long-term viability in propelling the energy transition. This challenge underscores an urgent and fundamental question: How can we maximize battery performance and safety in real-world operation?

To address this, we propose the development of holistic intelligence for battery systems – a paradigm that integrates both hardware innovations and advanced algorithmic strategies to embed intelligence across all facets of battery operation. This presentation will highlight our latest efforts in this direction, spanning battery modeling, state estimation, system design, and management. The discussion will center on harnessing systems and control theory, power electronics, and machine learning to achieve high-performance and safety-critical battery systems.
